Welcome to Readsilentbooks.com - a website that celebrates silent books and the people that create, read, research, publish and love them!

I am Anita Berge. My professional background is as a teacher, storyteller, speaker and writer. I now work as a multilingual advisor, and for the last five years I have had the privilege of researching, teaching, reading and mediating silent books. In 2023 I won the "National award for arts and culture" for my research on using silent books to create more inclusive ECECs in multicultural districts. I finished my Master's degree on silent books, linguistic racism and reading cultures in Norwegian ECECs in 2025.

As part of my job, I am the project leader of Fabel silent book library, where I have curated a collection of over 350 silent book titles from all around the world. At Fabel we work with groups of children, multilingual families, newly arrived refugees, students at universities, librarians and researchers. Because of that, we are able to combine, expand and share knowledge on both the books and on visual literacy and how to read them.

The last years, I have been invited to share my knowledge both in Norway and abroad. Some examples are: I held workshops for for the University of Athens (Spiral project), at Ibby Congress 2024 (Trieste, Italy), at "Salongaften" for IBBY Denmark, for the libraries in Gentofte and Roskilde (DK), The University of Amsterdam, and for literature and art scholars from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Ukraine. I am also go to Biblioteca Ibby Lampedusa once a year to contribute to the important work that is being done there, and I review silent books for the large Norwegian website barnebokkritikk.no.

I hope you enjoy the site! It is still early days, and content is added all the time, especially book reviews - there are so many books in the collection so we have to do it little by little...There will also be more interviews with silent book artists and mediators. Through the website, we are building a network of silent book professional and enthusiasts around the world.

About our illustrations

Seou Lee is an author and animator from Korea. She fell in love with illustration as a child because of the many books in her parents’ daycare.

We fell in love with her illustration style when reading her book "Bye, penguin!", and we are so pleased that she accepted to be the artist of the illustrations for Readsilentbooks.com

Lee has published several wonderful picturebooks. You can follow her work from her Instagram and her blog.
